You can create some beautiful results with a little know how. I love painting with water colour and so have explored transferring that to cake but whilst it is similar it’s also very different! I do love to play and explore but Im no professional. But luckily for you I know a lady is mega talented at painting beautiful works of art on cakes. So much so that her work has been assumed to be AI Generated its that stunning. Quite the compliment!

Let me introduce you to Louise from The Rose On The Cake. Many of you may know Louise already, she so talented. Louise has been the industry for 9 years and has taught a variety of classes across the uk. Im delighted to say her very first experience at teaching group classes many moons ago was at Lady Berry Cupcakes.

I recently popped to Dorset to see her and have a catch up. Whilst there she taught me how to paint a cute floral design on fondant covered cookies. Louises style of painting on fondant is delicate, whimsical, whilst break taking. Louise’s paints a selection of florals, land scapes ,animals and adorable cottages. Louise has 5 tips for painting on fondant for you:

1.Cover some cake boards with fondant to practice. This takes away the pressure of painting on to a cake. You will feel more relaxed and you can just have fun painting!

2. Practice practice practice! I cannot recommend this enough, the more you paint, the more familiar the technique will become.

3. Keep your brush clean. When painting with cocoa butter you need to regularly clean your brush as the cocoa butter will begin to harden when it cools, which will harden the bristles and make it difficult to work with. Dip the brush into melted cocoa butter to melt any paint mixture on the brush, then wipe away with a paper towel.

4.Play with consistencies. Adding more cocoa butter to your paint mixture will dilute the colour, which is great for a water colour effect. To create a thicker, oil painting effect, add more dust. Be mindful that this consistency will dry quicker. Learning how to work with these consistencies will speed up your cake painting progress!

5. Don’t give up! The key to improving your painting is to know how improve the areas that you are not happy with. Rather than saying “ I can’t paint, this looks rubbish”, work out what it is that you don’t like. For example, is it the shape? If so, study the shape, and figure out what you need to do to improve it. Your work isn’t rubbish, painting is a process that goes through many ‘ugly’ stages, be patient and push yourself!
